Rev. ΓЄNIK, / KOMMЄPK, / AΠOΘHKHC / KOΛONI NЄO/SCAP CЄBAC/T, S XAPC... in six (?) lines. Unpublished in the standard references. An intriguing seal showing some hitherto unattested names of warehouses. Some flatness and surface roughness
, otherwise, good very fine.
From a European collection, formed before 2005.
There is some flatness of strike on this intriguing and apparently new kommerkiarios seal, leading to some uncertainties in the reading of the legends. On the obverse, the name and the court rank of the kommerkiarios who struck this seal are almost entirely obliterated. On the right side of the emperor, there seem to be traces of the letters OΔ, which leads to a tentative reading of Theodoros. The date (indiction 15) leaves both Theodosius III and Leo III as candidates for the identification of the emperor. We identify the imperial figure as Theodosius, because on his known seals, he is typically shown holding a globe with a patriarchal cross, like on our seal, while Leo III normally holds a globus cruciger.
